Dear Waccamaw High Family,

I am writing to make sure you are aware of the mental health services our school provides.  All services are confidential and free of charge for all students.

Suicide or attempted suicide is a very complicated act.  No one single thing causes it.  But in many cases, a mental health condition is part of it, and these conditions are treatable.  It is really important if you or your child is not feeling well in any way to reach out for help.  Children who are already vulnerable may be at greater risk due to exposure to the suicide of a peer.  Suicide should not be an option.  I am including some information that may be helpful to you in discussing suicide prevention with your child.

Our school has a Crisis Response Team.  Please refer any student who appears to be in crisis or having significant difficulty to our Crisis Team for immediate assistance.  If you or your child needs help right away, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), text “HOME” to 741741 to the Crisis Text Line, call 911, or take your child to the nearest crisis center or emergency department. Concerns can be reported anonymously through the quick tip app on the District website.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or one of the school mental health professionals, including our guidance counselors and/or school psychologist.  We can be reached by calling 843-237-9899.

Sincerely,
Adam George
