What is a School Psychologist?

School psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students; consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals to improve support strategies; work with school administrators to improve school-wide practices and policies; and collaborate with community providers to coordinate needed services. About Mrs. Wheeler

Emma Wheeler is the school psychologist for Waccamaw High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Coastal Carolina University and a master’s and specialist degree in school psychology from Winthrop University. Mrs. Wheeler has been with GCSD since 2012 and served Waccamaw High since 2016. She is a nationally and state certified school psychologist, as well as a licensed psychoeducational specialist. As a school psychologist, Mrs. Wheeler has training in mental health, learning, and behavior. Her goal is to help students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally through a range of services to youth and their families, and through collaboration with educators and parents. Mrs. Wheeler serves as a member of the school’s student intervention and MTSS team, as well as on the district’s crisis intervention team. Mrs. Wheeler lives with her husband, young daughter, and 2 dogs in Pawleys Island. She enjoys running, kayaking, hiking, traveling, baking, and yoga. Mrs. Wheeler is also passionate about animal rescue and serves on the board of Halfway There Rescue.
